The book
Sweden asked Selma Lagerlöf for a schoolroom geography, and she handed back one of the world’s great books. A boy who is cruel to animals is shrunk to thumb-size and carried off by the wild geese, and for fifty-five chapters the whole country unrolls beneath him: province by province, legend by legend, season by season. Lagerlöf was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and this is her gentlest masterpiece: a story about becoming kind, told at the pace of a migration.
