Rilke is the great poet of inwardness, of the thing seen so fiercely that it begins to look back at you. In the Dinggedichte (the panther at its bars, the archaic torso of Apollo) perception becomes a discipline close to prayer, and the famous verdict, ‘You must change your life,’ arrives not as a slogan but as the whole weight of the art.
