Greek · Homer

The oldest adventure in the West, and still the greatest.

The opening, set exactly as it reads in the app.

The Odyssey is the West’s first and greatest homecoming. For twenty years Odysseus is kept from Ithaca — by war, by the sea, by a one-eyed monster and a goddess who loves him — and the poem follows not a conqueror but a husband, a father, and a man whose sharpest weapon is his mind. Homer invented half of what we still ask of a story: the wanderer, the monsters, the disguise, the long-delayed return, the recognition that breaks the heart. Read in its own Greek, line beside line, the wine-dark sea comes nearer than three thousand years should allow.
